Zircon Formation in Impact Melts: Complications for Deciphering Planetary

چکیده
Introduction: The impact history of the solar system remains controversial. Early investigation of lunar samples, returned by Apollo astronauts, led to the 'Late Heavy Bombardment' (LHB) concept [1,2] which hypothesized a sharp increase in bolide flux centered around ~3.9 Ga. Evidence for this cataclysm was first derived from whole-rock U-Pb and Rb-Sr ages [2] but subsequently more on 40 Ar-39 Ar data [3,4]. However, interpretations of lunar

Constraints on Hadean zircon protoliths from oxygen isotopes, Ti-thermometry, and rare earth elements
[1] We report zircon oxygen isotope ratios and reconnaissance Ti-in-zircon concentrations, guided by cathodoluminescence image studies, for detrital zircons up to 4.34 Ga from the Narryer Gneiss Complex of Western Australia. Zircon oxygen isotope results bolster the view that some Hadean (>3.85 Ga) zircon source melts were enriched in heavy oxygen, a sensitive proxy for melt contamination by se...
متن کاملComment on "Zircon thermometer reveals minimum melting conditions on earliest Earth" II.
Watson and Harrison (Reports, 6 May 2005, p. 841) interpreted low temperatures (approximately 700 degrees C) for Hadean zircons as evidence of the existence of wet, minimum-melting conditions within 200 million years of solar system formation. However, high-temperature melts (approximately 900 degrees C) are zircon-undersaturated and crystallize zircon only after substantial temperature drop du...
متن کاملTi-in-zircon thermometry: applications and limitations
The titanium concentrations of 484 zircons with U-Pb ages of *1 Ma to 4.4 Ga were measured by ion microprobe. Samples come from 45 different igneous rocks (365 zircons), as well as zircon megacrysts (84) from kimberlite, Early Archean detrital zircons (32), and zircon reference materials (3). Samples were chosen to represent a large range of igneous rock compositions. Most of the zircons contai...

A powder mixtures of 18.72% wt, 17.67% wt Al2O3 and 63.6% wt zircon were prepared and milled in a planetary ball milled for one up to 10 hours in presence of air. After removal Iron impurity from as-milled samples, they were isothermally heated in temperature range of 1300-1450 0C for one hour in an air atmosphere. After cooling the samples, they were studied using XRD analyses. The XRD and PSA...
متن کاملContinental growth histories revealed by detrital zircon trace elements: A case study from India
Simultaneous acquisition of detrital zircon Pb-Pb ages and trace element abundances from grains collected across the Indian craton, spanning ~3 b.y., reveals prominent shifts in Eu/ Eu* and light and middle to heavy rare earth element ratios. These shifts correspond to a ca. 3.0–2.2 Ga interval of crustal thickening during Indian craton formation, followed by a period wherein arc magmatism occu...
